Vancouver Island Regional Library
The Vancouver Island Regional Library system was founded in 1936 and it now features 38 branches and over a million titles.
The new Parksville branch at the PCTC has five computers; two are funded by the Gates Foundation, two by Community Access Program grants, and one is for catalogue access.
Many of the library's services are available through its web site http://www.virl.bc.ca.
These include:
- placing a hold on a book;
- looking up books, videos and cassettes in the VIRL catalogue;
- checking your borrowing record;
- renewing books;
- asking reference questions;
- looking for online magazine articles;
- referencing book lists;
- finding out about what's new at the library;
- accessing databases which contain full text newspaper and magazine articles, health and medical related databases, and business and research databases. Free access is obtained by becoming a library member. The databases can be accessed from home or in the library by keying in the library card number.
