Springwood Park

Address: 500 Despard Avenue West

Prior to 1995 when Despard Avenue was still a dirt road, “Springwood” existed but in a much smaller space. Springwood then consisted of an all-weather gravel field along with a peewee baseball field. Eventually they were both irrigated and grassed.

In 1995, the lands that would become Springwood Park were dedicated as parkland with the development of the next phase of Maple Glenn and the construction of Springwood Elementary School. By 1997 work had been completed to install what has become Parksville's primary sports field complex. The 8.57-hectare (21 acres) park is also adjacent to school facilities such as a small children's playground and an outdoor basketball court.

The City has a shared use agreement with the School district. Fields behind the school may be occupied during school hours.

Springwood Park is the hub of a trail system connecting to the 1.2-kilometre Maple Glen linear park trail and four kilometres of trails in the Parksville Wetlands trail system. As well, the Coombs to Parksville Rail Trail begins at Springwood Park. Opened for use in late 2016, this 3-metre wide, level, and accessible gravel path serves as an exercise route for everyone. Walk, run, or ride, it is seven kilometres from Springwood Park to the Station Road trailhead in Coombs. Markers along the way help gauge your pace.

Sports Field and Ball Diamonds
There are two baseball diamonds and two softball diamonds on the sports field and two additional baseball diamonds on either side of the tennis courts at Springwood Park. The sports field is used for soccer, field hockey, field lacrosse and other activities. Unorganized or "pick up" games do not require field bookings. Additional sports fields and baseball diamonds are in the Parksville Community Park.

  • The City website should be checked to verify facility closures due to weather and maintenance concerns.
  • To book the sports fields or ball diamonds for organized leagues, camps or events, email fieldbooking@rdn.bc.ca.
  • Booking questions should be directed to the Regional District of Nanaimo at 250 752-5014.

A concession facility is located near the baseball diamonds. The concession is not staffed or maintained by the City. A picnic area is available in front of the concession facility. The building is equipped with group male, group female and universal washrooms. Universal washrooms are open daily; group washrooms are typically only opened upon request. Contact the operations department with your request three days prior to your booking 250-248-5412.

Tennis
There are six tennis courts in Springwood Park. Up to five of the courts may be reserved for the Arrowsmith Tennis Club at varying times depending on the season but are otherwise available for public use. There are additional tennis courts in the Parksville Community Park.

To ensure the tennis courts are enjoyed by all, compliance with the following tennis court etiquette is appreciated:

  • When people are waiting to play, court time is limited to one set, or a maximum of 60 minutes.
  • Activities other than tennis or pickleball are not permitted on courts (such as hockey, skateboarding).

Off-leash Dog Park
Springwood Park also features two side-by-side off-leash dog areas, a great spot to let dogs run and play and it's also an excellent spot for socialization...for both dogs and owners. The fenced exercise areas have running water for thirsty dogs, dispensers containing biodegradable doggie waste bags, trash bins for disposal of dog waste and a covered shelter with picnic table for owners. While in the off-leash park, dogs must be off leash for their own safety
